Login.gov Shift

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a mandatory update to its online account system. Starting March 29, 2025, users must shift from the “My Social Security” login to the new federal system powered by Login.gov. Failure to do so could result in their payments being paused.

This change is part of a broader federal push for stronger cybersecurity protections. Login.gov provides a secure single sign-on for accessing multiple government services, including Social Security. Through this platform, users can request replacement Social Security cards, update personal details, and access important tax documents. The process to transition is straightforward.

Users need to create a Login.gov account, link their existing My Social Security account, and verify and update their personal information. Individuals who created their My Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, already use Login.gov or ID.me and do not need to take additional action. Accounts created before that date must transition.

Mandatory account update deadline approaches

Failure to complete the process by the deadline will result in loss of access to online services and risk delayed or suspended benefit payments. The SSA has provided detailed resources to help individuals with the transition.

Assistance is available through the Login.gov Help Center, the ID.me Help Center, and SSA’s customer service line at 1-800-772-1213. For those without mobile phones or internet access, authentication via email or landline options is available when setting up their Login.gov account. While current Social Security payments are not automatically affected by the transition, failure to complete the process will block access to critical services, such as updating banking information or requesting documents, potentially leading to payment delays.

This transition is part of a broader effort to modernize federal services. The SSA’s adoption of Login.gov aligns with federal authentication standards designed to protect sensitive personal data from fraud and identity theft. As more government services move online, the ability to securely access Social Security benefits will increasingly rely on systems like Login.gov.

Beneficiaries are strongly advised to complete the transition well before the March 2025 deadline to avoid potential disruptions. For more information and step-by-step guidance, visit the SSA’s website.
